End of the Trail

The trail that I have trodden,
the trail that brought me here,
is best now abandoned and forgotten
for the end of the trail draws near.
The sun that once warmed my face
is now setting at my back.
No more energy left to run the race,
and I know the cards are stacked.
When I was young and fancy free
I chose the trail that I would take,
now the path has chosen me
and that destiny I can’t shake.
