Light exists to make the shadows,
and in shadows we exist.
Yet we curse the darkness
and shake an angry fist.
Just as the break of morning
follows hard upon the night,
so too hope does come from
just beyond our muddled sight.
While we know the shadows
and all the shades of gray
that fill the world around us
will always go away,
we don’t believe that hope
from a dark place can spring,
and yet it’s human nature,
that to hope we endless cling.
So when hope is weakest,
and furtherest from our sight,
we must look into the shadows
to find a single ray of light.
A light that fades the dark,
and does battle with the gray.
A light that does signal
a fresh unfolding day.
